Giving Clothes a Second Life: Creative Upcycling Workshop in Kaunas
On 17 September 2026, a creative clothing upcycling workshop took place at Kaunas Artists’ House in Lithuania, bringing together participants interested in creativity, sustainable fashion, and more environmentally friendly lifestyles. The activity encouraged young people to rethink their approach to clothing and discover how old or forgotten garments can be transformed into something new rather than thrown away.
Together with designer Kristupas, participants explored different ways to refresh and personalise the clothes they already owned. Through hands-on creative activities, they experimented with various techniques, decorated garments, tested new ideas, and discovered opportunities to express their individual styles. The workshop provided a welcoming space for creativity and experimentation, showing that updating a wardrobe does not always require buying new clothes.
Clothing upcycling is one way to make fashion more sustainable. The production of new garments requires natural resources, energy, and water, while discarded textiles contribute to growing amounts of waste. By extending the lifespan of existing clothes, people can help reduce waste, make better use of available resources, and develop more conscious consumption habits. The workshop demonstrated that sustainable choices do not have to mean sacrificing personal style or creativity. Instead, they can offer an opportunity to create unique garments that reflect individual personalities and preferences.

In addition to the creative activities, participants were introduced to the Youth Green Compass project, which promotes environmental awareness and encourages young people to take an active role in building more sustainable communities. They also learned about other initiatives and activities through which young people can get involved, share their ideas, and contribute to positive change in their local environments.

The event combined practical learning with creative expression, allowing participants to explore sustainability through an accessible, hands-on experience. It also encouraged reflection on everyday habits, including how we choose, use, maintain, and dispose of our clothes. Small actions, such as repairing a damaged garment, decorating an old jacket, or finding a new purpose for an item that is no longer worn, can be a starting point for more responsible consumption.
The workshop was a reminder that sustainable fashion can be creative, personal, and accessible to everyone. By rethinking the value of the clothes we already own, we can reduce waste, express our individuality, and take meaningful steps towards a more sustainable future.
A big thank you to everyone who joined the workshop and contributed their creativity, curiosity, and positive energy!
Change starts with small, creative steps. Give your clothes a second life and be part of the movement towards a greener future! 💚
